Kosárlabda / Basketball
Kosárlabda |
A hétvégén hihetlen szerencsénk volt. Sikerült jegyet szerezni Kina-Németország és Dream Team (USA)-Spanyolország meccsre.
A stadion a legnagyobb, amit valaha láttunk talán a Medison Square Gardennel vetekedett a hangulat meg leirhatatlan, tekintve, hogy a kosár az Kinában nemzeti sport. Saccra 20.000 ember férhet be.
Mindenki ide akart jegyet, a 60 yuanos jegyünket 2000 yuanért akarta megvenni egy ürge a meccs előtt. Hát igen virágzik a jegypiac
WE were so lucky int he weekend we could get tickets for China-Germany and Dream Team (USA)-Spain matches.
The stadium was the biggest we have ever seen, almost as big as the Medison Square Garden. (approximately for 20.000 spectators)The atmosphere was awesome, considering that Basketball is a national sport in China.
Everybody wanted a ticket for this night, a bloke wanted to buy our 60 yuan ticket for 2000 yuan. It is a blooming business.
Though we sat at the top we could see quite well and we were seated next to an expert (who turned out to be the bro-in law of Szilveszter Csollany, Olympic Champion)
I’m not good in sport commentaries so I just would like to say that there was big tension btw. China and Germany and was a close and very excting match. When China won 56-59 you should have seen Maggie’s face.
After that we saw the Dream Team playing which is not a myth anymore they can theoretically be defeated since Atlanta, they were beaten in Sidney but still watching Kobe Bryant or James playing is something rare and exciting. Spain was ok until the 4th quarter, but then they were shamfully finished off. Their players are good they play in NBA but the dream team was not to be beaten that night.
We also saw box that day but as the Hungarian Kalocza was beaten badly our mood was spoilt a bit. We found box tougher in live than as it seems from sitting on the couch. There were really enjoyable rounds in 75 kg.
We also got tickets for waterpolo quarterfinals but the Hungarian girls were to good so they already got qualified for the semi-finals, which we didn’t dare to assume by the time we bought the tickets. So we saw Italy-Holland (not too exciting) and a very good Australia-China match. Australia seemed to lose untill the end of the 3rd quarter but finally succeeded.

Várva várt Olimpia/ long awaited Olympics
29. Olimpia, 29th Olympics |
Mindenesetre hihetetlen a hangulat, kina buszke kicsit olyan is mintha maguknak csinaltak volna. A nyelv miatt tunik igy.

And below is the long awaited Olympic report. It is ment to be a true documentation based on the information collected and experience we lived in the first 3 days of the Olympics. (We actively participated in 6 handball and a tennis match) Check the link on index http://galeria.sportgeza.hu/peking2008/2008/08/09/magyarorszagsvedorszag_3024/?current_image_n
China's pride the 29th Olympics ppl here sincerely believe that this Olimpic can be a good one once they give all their kindness, smiles, enthusiasm and hard work. We as Europeans would definitely add good organization skills, planning and efficiency as main component for a good Olympic game. But we are not there to decide, so we can only see and judge things.
We watched the Opening ceremony in a tiny place with huge Screen, getting there was the tough part, as always is in China. Beijing was empty that night it would have been a frightening sight if I hadn`t known it was because of the excitement about the Opening. All the people went to see the ceremony. Our taxi driver forgot to mention that travelling by subway in such circumstances would have been 4 times faster and 10 times cheaper. We just arrived on time ,the local AIESEC members were already watching the broadcast, waving flags and when we arrived we also received some I love China stickers. The Opening ceremony introduced Chinese Culture to us. It was full of visual effects to make us feel we are in China, the country of aesthetics. My first thought about the ceremony was that such a show was only possible to make in China, soo many people working together with the preciseness of robots, machines. Amazing it was, this is China. We had to leave in time because next day we were going to watch 4 handball matches (at this time we only had 2 tickets. We had to change lines 3 times and take a bus to get home.
Travellingtime from our accomodation to OSC Gymnasium was 2,5 hours. Plus some 1,5 km walk from the closest subway station. Our learning point: it takes far too long time to get to different spots, although they seem to be close on the map. You may find it a good idea to catch a taxi, I have to tell it isn`t. The drivers either don`t know the places or they don`t have permission right. So our first match wasn`t a big surprise France winning over Angola, but it was quite an experience to watch it from the third row. The buffet is not expensive with our measures and works quite well, considering the fact that nobody speaks English among the buffemen. The situation is the same with Volunteers, 99% of them doesn`t speak English good enough to guide you from point A to B. Sometimes they speak English but then they lack the information…too bad. So our 2nd learning point if you need to go somewhere, you should find the way on your own. There will be people to help you but they don`t speak the same language. But they do smile a lot! I can`t provide good news regarding information boards or street signs either, they are seldom in English. I suggest everyone to check the Official Olympic guide, the cover and sponsor page being the only English part of it.
But we could easily get over the difficulties once the Hungarian girls beat the Swedish team. They really played outstandingly and also the Hungarian supporters team helped them a lot as we stayed together all the time against all volunteers threats. As they speak such a poor English we pretended not to understand them, it wasn`t very difficult. It is also worth mentioning our other Olympic sports people, unlike those of any other nation, came to support the Handball team, all our respect to them as they are able to think about other things than their own success. We were able to establish some valuable connections with the supporters` team and this is how we got further tickets. (trick is easy and smart Hungarian Olympic Committee bought a couple of tickets in advance and now they are selling it for 120% of the price to cover Olympic sportsmen salaries ans other expenses) So that day Bandi managed to get other tickets for Norway China handball, tennis, box and basketball and waterpolo quarter-final.
That night we saw Norway playing against China, it was a farewell gift to Gry. Not much to our surprise Norway won. Looking through all the matches finally always the stronger team won (sometimes in front of the TV it seems different) Fair or not, but it is correct :-)
As an end of a long day we travelled home 2 hours and immediately went to bed as we knew Sunday will be a long day with both tennis and handball matches. Tennis matches are held a bit further down from the Olympic centre and we didn`t have a clue how to get there, so we left 3,5 hours prior to Szavay`s game. As in China there are no signs we stood in the longest queu, as we assumed this was the security check before taking the subway. There was a heavy rain and we received raincoats from some of the volunteers. 20 minutes later a volunteer came and tried to explain us that we can`t wait in that line with bagpacks, so we (ex)changed lines and disapproving looks. After an other 10 minutes it turned out that for the tennis court there is a bus, therefore we are not allowed to use the subway. (not kidding, it`s not your choice how you go to the matches). We decided not to argue and we stood in the queue it was the longest ever. The bus had no signs and no English speaking staff so by mistake they make us get off 2 kms far from the courts. We had to walk for the remaining distance, we decided if the 2 year olds in front of us can walk, we won`t take a taxi. But I have to say this really spoils the fun. By the time we got there, it was raining so heavily that the matches were cancelled. We had an open ticket which means you can attend all matches but the one on the central court. Bandi tried to find out where Szavay is playing but there was no such court. The information signs were soaking wet, because they were printed on A4 papers. So we only heard different gossips about what is going on finally after 2,5 hours delay due to the thunderstorm we tried to find the Hungarian match again but as it was impossible with practically no or false information, we decided to watch Gonzales beating (badly) a Chinese player Sun Peng, ranks 400 places behind him. We could have seen Blake playing as we sneaked in in the central court without our tickets being checked but Gry got caught and we decided to leave for the handball match. Germany playing against South-Korea. It was pretty difficult to get back as on the bus there was no sign which stop is next or which is which. Finally we arrived on the spot what is more we got to know a German bloke, Svan who was happy to buy our extra ticket and proved to be good supporter for his team. As he convinced the hired Chinese supporters (there are quite a few on all the matches) to support Germany. Finally the Gold medal-defending German team won.
After a quick dinner in the Japanese restaurant we travelled back to the kindergarden.
It was an amazing weekend, we needed lots of luck and stamina to find the given destination but finally the sports experience overwhelmed everything.
I wish everybody could see at least one match like we did to really feel the spirit here.

The metroline built by the Chinese government in 7 years is 200 km-s long. (they 're gona extend it to 550 km in the upcoming 8 years)
Well yes the metroline 4 struggle back home is rather a shame.... Klari & Bandi P.s: A nyertesek kapnak kinai meglepetést, ha hazamentünk. The winners will get a Chinese surprise when we got home.2008/08/03
A Kinai Nagy Fal /The Great Wall
A Nagy Fal/ The Great Wall |
Bandi igy 25 yuanért jutott be.
Yesterday, our Day arrived so we had to get up early to discover the icon of Mainland China, to climb the Great Wall. (we got up at 6 am).
By this time we have accomplished our list of must-sees in Beijing (the touristic one): the Lama temple, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Beijing Zoo, several market, Houhai lake (the Temple of Heaven is excluded, we are going to visit it soon).
How to get there?. Many books offered many solutions we decided , to visit the closest point BADALING (some 70 km northwest from Beijing). So we took line 2 to Quimen but there we had to face the usual language barrier problem. Chinese people are kind and helpful but can’t speak English enough to give basic information. Finaly a policeman was so helpful to call his sister who spoke English and guided us to a bus which went to the Great Wall. Unluckily it was a tourist centre and and a tourist bus…
There we tried to find out where we could take public transportation to Badaling, but even the kind Chinese thought helping us would seriously damage there business interest. (as they were selling Great Wall tours for 140 yuan) So instead they took some 100 pictures about us to pimp their company brochures. So after the 107th picture and no useful information I just shouted enough (I can do it in Chinese now J) We left the bus station.
Later it came to my mind that taking a taxi could be a similar amount so we tried to negotiate it. (with Maggie’s help on the phone) we could get a taxi for 500 yuan for a return trip. As Gry’s Norwegan friend Lina traveled with us. It sounded much better than a bus trip.
People who know me, have an idea how much I hate institutionalizes tourism. (being told when to look? where to look? what to look at?) So we were satisfied and we got there in 1,5 hours.
Paying the entrance ticket 45 yuan (25 y with student card and here they accept international one, first place after one month) and some drinks for tourist price altogheter we spent some 4700 Ft on visiting the Great Wall with taxi. Not that bad, is it?
The Great Wall was visible from the motorway already not so surprising when you consider the fact that it is almost 6000 km long. If we placed it end to end it would link New York with Los Angeles.
The Spectatorium of the Olympic Cycling is situated close to it, smartly enough the government ensured that in every round the Great Walls will be broadcasted.
I remember imagining the Great Wall as something flat after climbing up heigh on one end. I proved to be wrong as the pictures show. On the Great Wall you don’t walk, you do climb!
But climbing on it is such an experience that it is worth some energy and time. It is astonishing.
On the other hand it is a bit shocking how many thousands of people were worked to death during the construction of the wall from 400 BC till 1500. These number soaked significantly high during the reign of Quin Shi Huang, at that time the wall was a symbol of brutal death.
It is undertandable considering that we climbed 2 hours up to the top, only Bandi and Gry reached it. Liana and me we decided not to go higher, it was too tiring.
So this made me realize that it is high time to start doing some excersizes, especially because a 100 legged bug and a 70 year old man overtook me up on the stairs… Sad but true L
Climbing the Wall was an unforgettable experience especially because there was no flooding of tourists. All our respect to these hardworking Chinise building the wall. Their hard work definitely compensates their lack of efficiency. (but this topic is to be covered later)
Klari & Bandi
P.s. I found one of the top stupid sayings of U.S presidents, Nixon this time: This is a Great Wall and only a great people with great past could have a great wall and such a great wall will surely have a great future.
